The Essence of Humility

I'm an avid hockey fan and one of my favorite players is Cale Makar. I'm not a big fan because of his ability, but because of his humility. He talks about his accomplishments in a way that gives all the credit to his teammates, but when it comes to something done wrong by the team, he takes responsibility for things he did and some things that I don't believe he did. Although there are other players who do this, Makar seems to never give himself an ounce of praise, he gives it all to his teammates who help him. Another favorite of mine, is Matt Duchene, who is a Christian and is a very humble person, who uses his stick to remind himself of the Savior and uses the first few minutes before the game as time to go to the Father. The humility of these two players is amazing in the current culture of caring solely about oneself.
One of the best things about any person can do, is just be humble. Those people who are bumptious are the ones who make you want to walk away from them. A little humility can go a long way, humility is inviting, while vanity pushes people away. Humility is the only way that anyone should go to God, because anything you boast about is nothing in comparison to what He has done and He is the one who gave you the ability to do what you have done. Humility draws more beneficial attention than boasting every could, because people love to lavish humble people with praise because humble people accept praise in a way that is unexpected and the praiser wants to make sure that the other person realizes that what they did is spectacular.
Humility is one of the hardest things to master in this culture because everybody wants to be right and wants to be remembered. I often struggle with it because I often find myself being wrong, so when I'm right, I emphasize it, but we can fight it. The way I battle it is by thinking of things I'm grateful for and just continuing to list things I'm thankful for throughout the day. By being grateful, you cannot be vain because you did not give yourself these things and there is no room for vanity in gratefulness, that's why I start every prayer with gratefulness. Praising is another way to battle vanity, by praising Him in prayer, you will be focused on how great He is instead of yourself. When you praise others, you are too focused on them to say something good about yourself.
We all need to practice humility because we didn't create the world.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the breath that I get to breath and the talents that You have blessed me with, I'm awed that You have allowed me to accomplish so much in my life. You have allowed me so much, yet I keep asking for more; but even still You are overjoyed to bless me with more because I have come to You. You are my Savior, and I am grateful for that because I don't deserve it. It should have been me on the cross that day, nobody deserves this, but yet You have blessed us with this; because You have blessed me with this, I don't want to do anything that goes against You, I want every to turn to You and claim You as their Savior.
Thank You for the ability to write, but help me take on my humility. Help me be humble in my daily life. I am a nobody, but You have chosen me to tell about You, the only One who truly matters. Help me spread the word about the only Somebody. Help me to reflect You and Your love and humility, but nothing besides You Lord.
Amen.
